Describe the procedures
- Told study was about effect on punishment on learning (deception)
- Researcher drew lots of who would be the teacher and learner, rigged actor was always learner
- Shown shock generator
- Both shown next room, Mr Wallace strapped in a chair and said he had undergone treatment for heart condition
- Teacher given sample shock
- Teacher put in a different room and told to administer shock when learner got answer wrong until he was right, increase by 15 volts each time.
- PPs couldn’t see learner but could hear him, gave predetermined set of responses that got more serious
- 1 in 4 answers right
- Complained about heart and demanded to be let out
- 300v pounded on wall and at 315v but then was silent.
- Researcher gave prods to encourage teacher e.g. please continue and reassured no permanent damage was being done
- ended when refused to carry on administering shocks when they were then interviewed and debriefed
- PPs sent follow up questionnaires and offered counselling
What was the minimum volts of shocks all PPs gave?
300
What percentage went no further after 300 volts
12.5%
What percentage of participants administered the full 450v?
65%
What was the estimation of PPs that would go up to 450v by 14 psychology students?
3%
What did some PPs experience?
Seizures - 3
What did milgram conclude?
Proposed 13 factors contributed to obedience. People were willing to obey authority figures, even if it meant putting someone at risk.
