Process of social change Flashcards
what is social change?
when whole societies adopt new attitudes, beliefs and ways of doing things, not always positive. Eg suffragettes
what is the process of social change?
- drawing attention
- consistency
- deeper processing
- augementation principle
- snowball effect
- social cryptomnesia
explain drawing attention
Gathering attention through social proof. Eg suffragettes used posters and did marches
explain consistency
Remaining consistent with behaviours over time within a group
Can be flexible eg adapt
explain deeper processing
many people who had simply accepted status quo began to think deeply about unjustness of it
explain augmentation principle
individuals risked their lives numerous times. personal risk indicates strong belief and reinforces their message. Eg killed in front of kings horse
explain snowball effect
Gathering momentum more and more backed minority position
explain social cryptomnesia
people have memory that change has occured but dont remember how it happened. some people have no memory of events that led to change
asch social change
his study highlighted importance of dissenter- where one confederatre gave correct answer. this encouraged others to dissent. this is kind of thing that ultimately leads to social change.
milgram social change
in variation where confederate teacher refused to give shocks to learner, the rate of obedience in partcipants plummeted
evaluation points
S: research support from Nolan, Moscovich
S: real life examples
L: minority influence only indirectly effective
L: deeper processing may not play a role in how minorities bring about social change.
Research support?
- Nolan-> social influences processes led to reduction in energy consumption? messages on doors, sig decrease in energy usage. NSI= valid
- Moscovich study- blue slide green slide . C- lab based, artificial tasks
How is minority influence only an indirect influence?
Social change= slow eg time for drink driving attitudes to shift. Do minorities have that much influence? Delayed influence bc effects not seen for some time. Limited influence. Social change is very difficult and doesn’t always work
Why may deeper processing not play a role?
supposed bc think more deeply, majority think something diff, forced to think long + hard. Lowers validity. More majority than minority
What real life examples are there for social change?
Black lives matters, recycling campaigns
