Processes Flashcards
Concrete Reinforcement
It combines the high compressive strength of concrete with the high tensile strength of steel, as concrete has poor tensile strength.
Steel rebars are pre-stressed in the concrete and then cut to be compressed, thus strengthening the concrete
Dry Corrosion
Also known as oxidation, occurs when a metal comes into direct contact and reacts to gases in the atmosphere, without the presence of moisture, which creates a layer of oxide on the surface of the metal
Corrosive Environments
Areas where metals are exposed to conditions or substances where they may degrade and corrode
Wet Corrosion
when a metal comes into contact with water which causes a corrosive chemical reaction to take place
Corrosion Protection
Corrosion protection includes processes such as galvanisation and cathodic protection. Galvanisation covers the metal in a layer of zinc which protects the metal from corrosion, similarly with cathodic protection, zinc is a common material chosen as a sacrificial anode which corrodes itself to protect the metal from corrosion
