Product design - assessment 1 (November 2021) Flashcards
(18 cards)
Malleable
ability to be deformed by compression without tearing or cracking.
Hard
ability to withstand abrasive heat and indentation
Tough
ability to withstand sudden shock loading (high impact) with cracking.
Ductile
ability to be drawn or stretched.
Electrical conductor
low resistance to the flow of an electrical current.
Strength tension
Resists stretching by a pulling force.
strength compression
Withstand a pushing force.
Elasticity
Ability to flex and bend when subjected to forces ad return to normal shape when load is removed.
Durability
Ability to withstand what and tear and deterioration by weathering.
Fusibility
Ability to be changed into a molten state when heated.
Density
Mass per unit volume.
Relative density is the ratio of the density of the substance to that of pure water at 4 degrees.
Thermal properties
How a material reacts to heat such as expansion and insulation.
Physical properties
Can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter.
Mechanical properties
Refer to the way a material reacts to external forces.
Visual testing
Using the human eye to inspect and test a product.
Destructive testing
The material or component cannot be used after testing
Non - destructive testing
Using either radiography or ultrasound testing, this allows for the product to be used after testing.
Tensile testing
Applying weight to a material and
