Product Design Interview Prep Flashcards

1
Q

Tell me about yourself.

aka “Walk me through your resume.”

A

I received my degree in visual communication, which provided me with a strong foundation in design principles and communicating messages through visual elements.

Early in my career, I had the opportunity to work as a digital designer for Fashion PR firms and an independent women’s magazine. During those years, I honed my skills in creating visually compelling designs for digital platforms such as their social media, email newsletters, and small components of the web like banners.

As I continued my education by taking online courses, I started to learn more about empathy-driven design and product design. So I became very motivated to expand my skill set and delve deeper into the product design process, so I made the transition to product design.

During the past five years, I’ve earned two UX certificates and have been fortunate to work as a product designer, where I’ve experienced a deep sense of fulfillment and joy in creating products with diverse and talented cross-functional teams.

A

As a product designer, I thrive in collaborative environments where cross-functional teamwork is valued and encouraged. I believe that the collective synergy of diverse perspectives and expertise leads to the most successful outcomes. Working with various teams, such as engineers, product managers, designers, and marketers, excites me as it allows for a holistic approach to problem-solving.

I enjoy the collaborative nature of UX design, where ideas are shared, debated, and refined collectively. I actively seek opportunities to collaborate, share knowledge, and learn from others. I believe that fostering a supportive and open environment, where ideas are encouraged and respected, leads to innovative solutions and a positive work culture.

Furthermore, I embrace the challenges that come with collaboration and appreciate the opportunities for growth that arise from working with different teams. I understand the importance of effective communication, active listening, and adaptability in order to bridge the gap between disciplines and align our efforts toward a common goal.

In summary, I thrive in environments that promote collaboration, value diverse perspectives, and foster a team-oriented mindset. I am eager to contribute my skills and actively engage with colleagues across disciplines to create exceptional user experiences.

34
Q

How do you collaborate with other teams? / How do you collaborate with other members of the design team?

These practices ensure effective collaboration, leading to innovative solutions and exceptional user experiences.

35
Q

How Do You Handle Negative Feedback? / How do you handle negative feedback from stakeholders?

A

When faced with negative feedback, I embrace it as an opportunity for growth and improvement. I value constructive criticism and see it as a valuable tool for refining my work. In the past, I had a boss who provided swift feedback, and I appreciated their direct approach. I believe that feedback, even if initially challenging to receive, ultimately helps me enhance my skills and deliver better outcomes.

Furthermore, I prefer to receive feedback from internal parties before launching a product, rather than hearing it from customers post-launch. This approach allows me to address any potential issues or areas for improvement early in the design process, leading to a more successful final product.

In my view, everyone involved in a project is part of the same team, working towards a shared goal. If there are ways I can enhance my performance or contribute more effectively, I actively seek feedback and welcome discussions. I believe in fostering a collaborative and open environment where feedback is encouraged and valued, as it leads to continuous improvement and success for the entire team.

36
Q

Tell Me About a Time When You Disagreed With Your Team’s Recommendation. What Did You Do?

A

As a product designer, I value collaboration and open dialogue within my team. In a situation where I disagreed with their recommendation, I actively listened to understand their perspective, presented my own viewpoint supported by data, and proposed a compromise or alternative solution. By fostering discussion and finding common ground, we were able to reach a consensus that incorporated the strengths of both recommendations. This experience reinforced the importance of respectful disagreement and diverse perspectives in creating stronger design solutions.

37
Q

Tell Me About a Time When a Project Didn’t Go Exactly as Planned. How Did You Fix It?

A

During a project, unforeseen challenges disrupted our initial plan. To address this, I assessed the situation, communicated openly with the team and stakeholders, and collaborated to find solutions. We adapted our approach, reprioritized tasks, and focused on key objectives to mitigate the impact. After completion, we conducted a retrospective to learn from the experience and implemented those lessons in future projects. This taught me the value of flexibility, proactive problem-solving, and continuous improvement in navigating unexpected obstacles.
