Product Manufacture Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is one-off production?
Only one product is made at a time - they usually take a longtime to make and they are usually expensive
Give 3 examples of products you’d use one-off production for
Wedding dress , Bespoke Furniture , Sculpture
Why are one-off production products often expensive?
Because the require designing , making and transporting
What is batch production?
A series of identical products that are made either in small/ large quantities. Once made, another different series of products may be using the same workforce and equipment
Give 3 example of products that would be manufactured using batch production
Bread, Furniture, Clothes
What is continuous production?
When the product is continuously being produces possibly 24/7
True or False: continuous products are usually relatively expensive
False- they are usually relatively cheap
Give 3 examples of products that would be manufactured by continuous production
Cans, wood, screws
What is mass production?
A product that goes through a production line. The product is produced in large numbers.
Name 3 products that would be manufactured using mass production
Cars, electrical goods, replaceable car parts
What is ‘just in time manufacturing’?
Products are only manufactured as they are required and are made to order.
Name one advantage and disadvantage of ‘just in time’ manufacturing
Advantage: less storage space is required for materials
Disadvantage: there is a small lead time
What does CAD stand for?
Computer Aided Design
What does CAM stand for?
Computer Aided Manufacturing
List 3 benefits of using CAD/CAM
1) Accuracy
2) Reduced labour costs
3) Deletable errors
List 4 CAD/CAM manufacturing processes that can be found in schools
- Laser cutter
- Adobe Illustrator
- 2D Design
- Router
What is a production line?
A set of sequential operations established in a factory where materials are refined to produce an end-product
What is an assembly line?
A manufacturing process in which parts are added to a product in a sequential manner
True of False: materials in an assembly line are usually interchangeable
True
Name the manufacturing aide used for block patterns and cake decorating etc. and a description
Templates (/stencils) :
Shape made from a durable material to line up and cut around
Name the manufacturing aide used to pinch euro slots and crease card
Die cutter:
Used to produce a consistent cut out
What materials can you use a die cutter with?
Plastics, paper, card, leather and foam
Name the manufacturing aide used to make jelly, slip casting and aluminium casting
Mounds: a shaped cavity the liquids solidify/cools in
Name a manufacturing aide used to saw, cut, drill and punch
Jigs: device that you line up to material to accurately repeat an operation
