What issues gave rise to the Progressive Era?
Rise of big businesses, uncertain business cycles, gap between rich and poor, conflict between labor and capital ( management ), corrupt political machines, Jim Crow Laws, issue of women’s suffrage, etc.
Who were the Progressives?
Professional, upper middle class, women, Protestants
What was the Social Gospel?
Spread by Walter Rauschenbusch, linked Protestantism to reform by saying that good Protestants must actively push reforms to better society and help their fellow man.
New philosophies of Progressive Era
Pragmatism ( seeking a more practical approach to morality ), people began to view Laissez-Faire as impractical and “rugged-individualism” ( belief that people should fend for themselves and be self-made independent from government ) as old-fashioned, scientific management was favored, corruption was turned against
