Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
(9 cards)
Prokaryotic
Unicellular
DNA not in a nucleus
Organelles not membrane-bound
Store their energy as glycogen granules _ oil droplets.
DNA
Prokaryotes only have one molecule of DNA, a chromosome
The genes on that chromosome are often grouped into operons
Define operons
A no. of genes are switched on or off at the same time.
Ribosomes
Smaller in prokaryotic
Their size is determined by the rate at which they settle.
Cell wall
Prokaryotic cells have a wall made from peptidoglycon (murein)
What is peptidoglycon (murein)?
A complex polymer formed from amino acids + sugars.
Define “endosymbiosis”?
Mitochondria, chloroplasts + possibly other eukaryotic organelles were free living bacteria.
What are mesosomes + function?
Infoldings of the prokaryotic cell membrane and they carry out aerobic respiration.
Purpose pf cell wall?
protects from mechanical forces and water potential changes and water potential damage.
