Prokaryotic vs eukaryotic cells Flashcards
(3 cards)
Compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Prokaryotic: Most diverse. Small, 0.2 μm - 2.0 μm in diameter. Simple. No nucleus, cytoskeleton or membrane bound organelles. Eukaryotic: Large and complex. True membrane bound nucleus. Membrane bound organelles. Large and complex ribosomes. Cytoskeleton for structure and mobility. Large genome.
What’s the role of lysosomes?
Involved in degradation.
Involved in the phagocytosis of unwanted cells/foreign material in the immune response.
How do the structure of lysosomes help it to function?
Contain acid hydrolyses/enzymes (hydrolytic enzymes) that work at a low ph.
Using proton pump and chloride channel.
H+ and Cl- enter lysosome lumen, creating HCL.
