1
Q

The shorter the molecule…

A

the less viscous it is.

the more volatile (turn into a gas at a lower temperature) they are.

the lower the boiling point.

the more flammable.

2
Q

What does volatility help decide?

A

What the gas is used for.

The refinery gas fraction has the lowest boiling point making it ideal for using as bottled gas. When the tap of the bottle is opened, the fuel vapourises and flows to the burner where ignited.

3
Q

Why does the viscousity help decide how the hydrocarbon is used?

A

The really viscous hydrocarbons are used for lubricating engine parts and for covering roads.

4
Q

The petrol fraction has…

A

long molecules so higher boiling point.

Petrol is a liquid.

Ideal for fuel tanks.

Easily vapourised to mix with air before it is ignited.
