Properties of Organic Molecules Flashcards
(19 cards)
How many bonds does carbon have with other atoms?
- 4 bonds
- Tetravalent: 4 valence electrons are shared to make an an octet
Alkane
single bonds between carbons
Alkene
double bonds between carbons
Alkyne
triple bonds between carbons
What is Electron negativity?
Numerical rating of the atoms capability of attracting electrons in a covalent bond
What is a Polar Covalent bond?
When Electrons are shared unequally between two atoms
More electronegative atom has what partial charge?
Partial negative charge
Less electronegative atom has what partial charge?
Partial postitive charge
Does the Polarity of a covalent bond increase or decrease
It increases with increasing electronegativity differences
Carbon and Hydrogen share bonds with what electronegative atoms?
Oxygen and Nitrogen
What are functional groups?
- Atoms or groups of atoms within a molecule that have characteristic chemical or physical properties
- molecules with the same functional groups have similar properties and react in similar predictable ways
What is an amine
Contain nitrogen (R-NH2) (CH3-NH2)
What is an ether
Contains Oxygen (R-OR) (CH3-O-CH3)
What is an alcohol ?
Contains and OH group (R-OH) (CH3-OH)
What is a carbonyl group?
& name the different carbonyl compounds
A carbon atom double bonded to an oxygen atom carbonyl compounds include: - aldehyde - ketone - Ester - Carboxylic Acid - Amide
What is boiling point?
Temperature at which a substance changes from liquid to gas
What is solubility
Maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a given amount of solvent
- What are the different kinds of intermolecular forces?
- What one is the strongest and which is the weakest?
- Are the fires between Between polar or non polar molecules?
- London dispersion forces- between polar molecules
- Dipole-Dipole forces- between Polar molecules
- Hydrogen bonding- between molecules of OH or N-H bonds
- London Dispersion forces are weakest
- hydrogen bonding is the strongest
What is kinetic energy?
- Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because of its motion.
