Properties of the hair and scalp Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the outer layer of the skin?
The epidermis
What is trichology?
The study of hair and its diseases and care
What are the five main structures of the hair root?
Hair follicle
Hair bulb
Dermal papilla
Arrector pili muscle
Sebaceous (oil) glands
Tube-like depression or pocket in the skin or scalp that contains the hair root
Hair follicle
Lowest part of the hair strand. It is the thickened, club shaped structure hat forms the lower part of the hair root. It fits over and covers the dermal papilla
Hair bulb
Small, cone-shaped elevation located at the base of the hair follicle that fits into the hair bulb
Dermal papilla
Contains the blood and nerve supply that provides the nutrients needed for hair growth
Dermal papilla
Small, involuntary muscle in the base of the hair follicle.
Arrector pili muscle
Oil glands in the skins that are connected to the hair follicles.
Sebaceous glands
Fatty/oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands that lubricates the skin
Sebum
What are the three main layers of the hair shaft?
Hair cuticle
Cortex
Medulla
Consist of single overlapping layer of transparent, scale-like cells that look like shingles on a roof
Hair Cuticle
Fibrous protein core formed by elongated cells containing melanin pigment and is about 90% of the total weight
Cortex
Elasticity and natural hair color comes from this layer
Cortex
Innermost layer of the hair and is composed of round cells. Generally only thick/coarse hair contains it
Medulla
Keratinization
Living cells maturing and are filled with the protein, keratin, then continue to move upward where they lose their nucleus and die
Major elements that make up human hair and are also found in skin and nails
*HINT: referred to as COHNS elements
Carbon
Oxygen
Hydrogen
Nitrogen
Sulfur
The strong chemical bond that joins amino acids
Peptide bond
A long chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds
Polypeptide bonds
