Properties Of Waves EOY9 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What do waves transfere
Energy and information
How are waves formed?
Waves are formed by an oscillation or disturbance of a medium, or substance.
What are the w types of waves?
Transverse and longitudinal
Describe a longitudinal wave and give an example.
With longitudinal waves, the direction of particle oscillation is parallel to the direction or travel of the wave energy. Example sound
Describe a transverse wave and give and example.
With transverse waves, the direction of particle oscillation is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the wave energy. For example light, water wave
What is amplitude?
Amplitude is the distance to the peak from the waves midpoint (measured in m)
What is the wave length?
Wavelength is the distance between two consecutive peaks or troughs (measured in m)
What is the time period?
Time period is the time take for one oscillation of a wave (measured in s)
What is frequency?
Frequency is the number of complete waves per second (measured in hertz hz)
What does frequency equal?
Frequency Hz = 1/time period (s)
What is the equation for wave speed?
Wave speed = frequency x wavelength
