Prophets and Gospels - Unit 1 Terms Flashcards
(14 cards)
Christocentric
All Scripture points to Jesus Christ as Savior. Both Old and New Testaments reveal God’s plan of salvation through Christ.
Epistle
A book of the New Testament in the form of a letter from an Apostle
Aramaic
The common spoken language in Palestine during Jesus’ time.
Law
God’s commands and demands that show us our sin and inability to save ourselves. The Law acts as a mirror (showing sin), curb (restraining evil), and guide (directing Christian living). Shows our Sin.
Gospel
The “good news” of salvation is that Jesus Christ lived, died, and rose again to save sinners by grace through faith. The Gospel is God’s power for salvation and creates/strengthens faith. Shows our Savior
Old Testament
The first 39 books of the Bible, written before Christ’s birth, containing God’s promises of the coming Savior and the history of God’s chosen people Israel.
New Testament
The final 27 books of the Bible, written after Christ’s resurrection, recording Jesus’ life, death, resurrection and the early Christian church.
Silent Years
The approximately 400-year period between the Old and New Testaments when no Scripture was written, though God was still working to prepare for Christ’s coming.
Pentateuch
The first five books of the Old Testament (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy), written by Moses.
Exile
Primarily refers to the Babylonian Exile (586-538 BC) when God’s people were taken captive to Babylon as punishment for their unfaithfulness.
SOAP
A Bible study method: Scripture (read the passage), Observation (what does it say?), Application (what does it mean for me?), Prayer (pray about what you learned).
Luther’s Four Strands
- Instruction – What is God teaching me? 2. Thanksgiving – For what is God calling me to be thankful? 3. Confession – What is God asking me to confess? 4. Prayer – What is my response to God?
Verbal Inspiration
“God-breathed” the Scriptures into the authors of the Bible so that we know that the Bible is God’s true Word.
