Protein Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is the function of protein?
- Structural support
- Transport of substances
- Cell signalling
- Movement
- Coordination and regulation of activities
- Acceleration of chemical reactions
How do they provide structural support
Cytoskeleton, connective tissue
How do they transport substances
lon channels (Na+, K+)
How do they cell signal
Insulin, antibodies
How do they allow movement
Between cells, protein channels
How do they Coordinate & regulate activities
Via shape changes
Accelerating chemical reactions
Enzymes
Protein monomer?
Amino acid
How many amino acids are there
There is 20 amino acids, 8 of which are essential because our bodies cannot make them so we have to consume them
Side chain effect?
Differing side chains can cause the amino acid to be polar non polar acidic or basic
What bonds are formed between amino acids?
Peptide bonds are created through dehydration synthesis
What is the polymer of proteins called
Polypeptide
Amino acid structure
Amino group + C + carboxyl group

Side chain
Stages of protein formation
Primary stage
* sequence of amino acids
Secondary stage
* H bonding of peptide backbone
* beta sheet and alpha helix
Tertiary (3°) stage
• 3D structure due to side chain interactions
Quaternary (4°) stage
Various tertiary structures join together
Protein denaturation
Alteration of protein shape (and therefore function) due to:
• Heat.
• pH change
• Salt
• Mechanical agitation (stirring)
