Protein Flashcards
(11 cards)
Amino acid
Molecules that combine to form proteins
Peptide bond
A bond between 2 amino acids formed by a condensation reaction
Primary structure
The sequence of amino acids linked together to form a polypeptide chain
Secondary structure
Polypeptide backbone excluding the side chains (alpha helices and beta sheets)
Disulphide bridge
Covalent links between sulphur atoms of 2 amino acids
Alpha helix
Tightly coiled main chain with side chains extending outward
Beta pleated sheet
Two or more segments of a polypeptide chain forming a sheet-like structure held by hydrogen bonds
Tertiary form
Overall 3 dimensional arrangement of it’s polypeptide chain in space
Quaternary form
Several protein chains or subunits into a closely packed arrangement
Haemoglobin
A protein inside red blood cells that carry oxygen from the lungs to the tissue
Collagen
Protein molecule made up of amino acids. Provides structural support to the extracellular space of tissues
