Protein & Hydration Flashcards
(5 cards)
What are the role of hydration in an athlete?
- Thero-regulation
- preventing over heating - Electrocyte balance
- muscle contraction - intra/extra-cellular fluid balance
- cellular functioning - Blood pressue control
- changes in heart rate with exercise
Thermoregulation
Process of keeping body temperature within a range that support life
* ~37°C
* Athletes core can rise to 41.5 °C in competition
* Menstrual cycle can alter core body temperature
* Hypothalamus is our control center, “central regulation”
Heat balance
internal metabolic heat production = rate of heat exchange to environment
Thermoregulation functions
Physiological control
1. Sweating
* In humans, sweating can exceed 30 g/min
* Water lost with sweating is derived from all fluid compartments of the body
* Causing an increase in the concentration of electrolytes in the body fluids (hypertonicity)
2. Vaso-dilation
- less resistance
Behavioral control:
* Thirst - natural response on a hot day
* Shade-seeking behaviours
* Wearing light colored clothes, a hat
