proteins Flashcards
what is a dipeptide?
a molecule of two amino acids
what is a polypeptide?
a molecule of more than two amino acids
what is a protein?
one or more polypeptides joined together
what are proteins made from?
hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and NITROGEN
when polypeptides are formed, what is released?
a molecule of water
what is the primary structure of a protein?
sequence of amino acids
what is the secondary structure of a protein?
hydrogen bonds forming between amino acids, making an alpha helix or beta pleated sheet
what is the tertiary structure of a protein?
more bonds form, chain is coiled/folded further and it’s the final 3d structure for a single polypeptide chain
what is the quaternary structure of a protein?
the way polypeptide chains are assembled together
name different proteins and their function
enzyme - metabolism
structural proteins
transport proteins
antibodies - immune response
describe the biuret test for proteins
add a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution
add copper sulphate solution
positive result: purple colour
