protist, plant, fungi vocabulary Flashcards
(23 cards)
a flowering plant that produces seeds within a fruit
Angiosperm
Reproduction that does not involve the union of sex cells in which one parent produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent
Asexual Reproduction
The process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food
Cellular respiration
An organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal waste and consuming or absorbing the nutrients
Decomposer
An organism made up of cells that have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane; eukaryotes inside animals plants and fungi but not archaebacteria or eubacteria
Eukaryote
A kingdom made up of non-green, eukaryotic Organisms that have no means of movement, reproduce by using spores, and gets food by breaking down substances and their surroundings and absorb the nutrients
Fungi
an infection that is intestinal and shown by cramps, nausea, diarrhea, and bloating
Giardia
a growth movement by a plant/fungi in a response to the gravity.
Gravitropism
A woody, vascular seed plant whose seeds are not enclosed by an ovary or fruit
Gymnosperm
An organism that gets food by eating other organisms or their byproducts and that cannot make organic compounds from inorganic materials
Heterotroph
An organism from which a parasite takes food or shelter
Host
a mas of fungal and algal cells that grow together in a symbolic relationship and that are usually found on rocks or trees
Lichen
a protozoan parasite that invades red blood cells, which causes a changing fever
Malaria
The three groups of plants ( liverworts, hornworts, and mosses ) that lacks specialized conducting tissues and true roots, stems, and leaves
Nonvascular plant
An organism that feeds on an organism of another species (the host) and that usually harms the host; the host never benefits from the presence of the parasite
Parasite
The process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make food
Photosynthesis
the way a organism is facing weather it faces the sun or the opposite derection
Phototropism
An organism that belongs to the kingdom of protista
Protist
A reproductive cell or multicellular structure that is resistant to stressful environment conditions and that can develop into an adult without fusing with another cell
Spore
A disease transferred from uncooked meat or cat feces, can be dangerous for unborn children
Toxoplasmosis
The process by which plants release water vapor into the air through stomata; also the release of water vapor into the air by other organisms
Transpiration
Growth of all or part of an organism in response to an external stimulus, such as light
Tropism
A plant that has specialized tissues that conduct materials from one part of the plant to another
Vascular plant
