protist, plant, fungi vocabulary Flashcards
(23 cards)
Protist
Protist is an informal term for any eukaryotic organism that is not an animal, plant or fungus.
Heterotroph
A heterotroph is an organism that cannot fix carbon from inorganic sources but uses organic carbon for growth.
Eukaryote
A eukaryote is any organism whose cells contain a nucleus and other organelles enclosed within membranes.
Decomposer
an organism, especially a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate, that decomposes organic material.
Parasite
an organism that lives in or on another organism and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host’s expense.
Host
an animal or plant on or in which a parasite or commensal organism lives.
Fungi
A fungus is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes unicellular microorganisms such as yeasts and molds
Spore
a minute, typically one-celled, reproductive unit capable of giving rise to a new individual without sexual fusion, characteristic of lower plants, fungi, and protozoans.
Lichen
A lichen is a composite organism that arises from algae and/or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi in a symbiotic relationship.
Nonvascular plant
Non-vascular plants are plants without a vascular system consisting of xylem and phloem
Vascular plant
Vascular plants, also known as tracheophytes and also higher plants, form a large group of plants that are defined as those land plants that have lignified tissues for conducting water and minerals throughout the plant
Gymnosperm
The gymnosperms are a group of seed-producing plants that includes conifers, cycads, Ginkgo, and gnetophytes
Angiosperm
The flowering plants, also known as Angiospermae or Magnoliophyta, are the most diverse group of land plants
Photosynthesis
is the process by which plants, some bacteria, and some protistans use the energy from sunlight to produce
Cellular respiration
is the process by which the chemical energy of “food” molecules is released and partially captured in the form of ATP.
Transpiration
is the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves
Tropism
the turning of all or part of an organism in a particular direction in response to an external stimulus.
Gravitropism
is a turning or growth movement by a plant or fungus in response to gravity.
Phototropism
the orientation of a plant or other organism in response to light, either toward the source of light
Asexual Reproduction
offspring arise from a single organism
Toxoplasmosis
A disease that results from infection with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite.
Malaria
A disease caused by a plasmodium parasite, transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
Giardia
An intestinal infection caused by a giardia parasite.
