Protists and Fungi - Chapter 8 Flashcards
(22 cards)
Protist
One or many-celled organism that lives in moist or wet surroundings
Eukaryotic cells
Cells that have a nucleus and other internal, membrane-bound structure
Algae
plantlike protists
Diatoms
weird shapes, glass bodies, make up toothpaste and road paint
Dinoflagellates
spinning flagellates ( have 2 flagella )
Flagellum
a long, thin, whip-like structure used for movement
Eueglenoid
a unicellular plantlike protist with a flagellum at one end of its body.
Red Algae
contains chlorophyll but produces large amounts of red pigment, lives about 200 meters deep
Green Algae
can be one or many-celled, most live in water but can live moist environments, no pigments to make it another color
Brown algae
has brown pigment, found in cool, saltwater environments, are many-celled, most prominent is kelp
Protozoans
one-celled, animal-like protists
Ciliates
Short, threadlike structures that extend from the cell membrane.
Micronucleus
involved in reproduction
Macronucleus
controls feeding, the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, the amount of water and salts entering and leaving Paramecium and other functions of it.
Proterospongia
a member of one group of flagellates that might share an ancestor with ancient animals
Pseudopods
move through their environments and feed using temporary extensions of their cytoplasm
What does Pseudopod mean?
False foot
Sediment
a buildup of plant and animal remains and rock and mineral particles
Giardia
flagellated parasite, found in water that is contaminated with wastes from human or wild or domesticated animals
Slime Molds
delicate, web-like structures on the surface of their food supply
Downy mildew
a plant parasite that grows in warm days, and cool, moist nights
What do fungus-like protist do that are good for the environment
help break down decaying organisms
