Protozoa Flashcards
(10 cards)
What 3 ways do protozoan diseases cause symptoms?
- directly damage host tissues (size)
- toxic protozoal products
- immune response to protozoans
What protozoan pathogen reproduces in and ruptures host RBCs?
Malaria (or babesia bovis)
What protozoan pathogen attaches to and digests contents of host intestinal cells?
Giardia
What are the 4 broad classifications of protozoa?
- flagellates
- ciliates
- amoeba
- apicomplexan - merozoite
What is the function of the conoid and polar ring?
Allows merozoite to burrow into host cell
What is the function of rhoptries and micronemes?
Provide secretory substances that provide gliding motility and allow fir orientation of the conoid and polar rings to the host cell.
What is the role of the micropyle on oocysts?
Senses conditions of the external environment so the oocyst knows when to rupture (in host gut)(low pH, high CO2)
What is the active stage of malaria called?
Trophozoites
When the RBC ruptures in malaria, what is released?
Merozoites (also toxic by-products)
How do sporozoites evade the immune system in malaria?
Undergo schizogony (coat themselves in lever cell membrane)
