Protozoans Flashcards
(28 cards)
Survives at cold temps 0-40C
Entamoeba moshkovskii
Small race of E. histolytica
Entamoeba hartmanni
Iodine stains large glycogen body dark brown
Iodamoeba butschlii
Food vacuoles has ingested leukocytes
Entamoeba gingivalis
Cyst form has 8 nucleus, iodine stains glycogen
Entamoeba coli
Morphologically similar to E. histolytica but different DNA and ribosomal RNA
Entamoeba dispar
Only amoeba with no cyst form
Entamoeba gingivalis
Dx for cyst stage
Formalin ether/ethyl acetate concentration test, zinc sulfate floatation
Merthiolate iodine formalin, more sensitive conc method for
E. histolytica
Found on pigs and monkeys, with angular or pointed chromatioidal bars
Entamoeba poleckii
Identical to Entamoeba poleckii and can be differentiated by isoenzyme analysis
Entamoeba chatonni
Causes amebic liver abscess and colitis
E. histolytica
Quadrinucleated, cigar shaped chromatoid bodies
E. histolytica
Diagnostic for E. histolytica
Ingested RBC, hematophagous
Thermophilic true pathogen
Naegleria fowleri
Disease caused by Naegleria fowleri
Primary Amebic meningoencephalitis
N. fowleri trophozoite infects penetrates
Penetrates the nasal mucosa and via olfactory nerves to the brain
Morphology of Acanthamoeba spp
Acanthopodia = spiny filaments/thorn like
Acanthamoeba spp is a possible reservoir for
Begionella, mycobacteria, G- bacilli
Diseases caused by Acanthamoeba spp
Acathamoeba keratitis and Granulomatous amebic encephalitis
Dx for Acanthamoeba spp
epithelial biopsy and corneal scrapings
Trophozoite with progressive directional movement with ingested RBC
E. histolytica
Naegleria fowleri morphology
Blunt, lobose pseudopodia and directional motility
Naegleria fowleri trophozoites are found in
CSF and tissue
