Provable Q Types Flashcards
(11 cards)
1
Q
Inference
A
- must be true/follows logically
- inference
- properly concluded
- look for the thing you can prove definitely must be true
- basic, easy, redundant answer
- Does this have to be true?
2
Q
Fill In
A
- completes/concludes
- fill in the blank
- look for the thing you can prove completes the author’s thoughts
- answer is an inference, & straightforward
- Does this have to be true?
3
Q
Controversy
A
- point at issue/disagreement
- disagree
- differing opinions
- look for the thing you can prove the 2 speakers disagree about

5
Q
Method
A
- argument proceeds by
- describes
- argumentative technique/method of reasoning/strategy
- responds by (in Debates)
- look for a provable description for what happened in the stimulus
- Does this happen?
6
Q
Argument Part
A
- role/function
- argument part
- relevance to
- look for a provable description of what the phrase is doing in the argument
- stick close to the stimulus
- Is this what the phrase is doing?
7
Q
Classic Flaw
A
- flaw/flawed
- most vulnerable to criticism
- questionable techniques
- look for a provable description of what the argument did wrong
- Is this what’s wrong with the argument?
8
Q
Loophole Flaw
A
- most vulnerable to criticism on the grounds that + [Loophole Flaw Prefix]
- look for a provable description of how the argument overlooked the loophole
- stimulus assumes something dumb in service of its argument
- Was it bas that the argument overlooked this?
9
Q
Most Strongly Supported (MSS)
A
- most strongly supported
- most strongly suggests
- look for the thing you can prove is very, very, very likely to be true
- inference is more or less the answer
- one will have all the support, others will have none
- Does this pretty much have to be true?
10
Q
Conclusion
A
- main point
- main conclusion
- look for a provable translation of conclusion
- conceptual answer instead of exact words
- NOT inferences or premises
- Is this a translation of the conclusion?
11
Q
Necessary Assumption (NA)
A
- necessary/depends/requires/relies
- assumes/assumption
- conclusion does not follow unless
- argument assumes which one
- look for the thing you can prove must be true, if the conclusion is true
- negated version of the Loophole
- if the correct answer is negated it will destroy the argument
- If this conclusion is true, does this have to be true?
