What is photosynthesis?
The process by which green plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and food, i.e. energy in the form of sugar.
What three basic elements do plants need to live?
- Water
- Sunlight
- Carbon dioxide
What do plants breathe in and out?
Breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen.
What is the major source of oxygen on Earth?
Plants.
What is the simplified equation for photosynthesis?
6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Through what openings do plants absorb carbon dioxide?
Stomata.
From where do plants draw water needed for photosynthesis?
Soil through the plants’ roots.
What happens to water during photosynthesis?
Water is oxidised, meaning it loses electrons.
What happens to carbon dioxide during photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide is reduced, meaning it gains electrons.
What is produced when water is oxidised and carbon dioxide is reduced?
Oxygen and glucose.
What is chlorophyll?
A green substance that allows plants to capture sunlight.
What structures in plant cells contain chlorophyll?
Chloroplasts.
What chemical do chloroplasts store energy in?
ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
What is the second phase of photosynthesis called?
Calvin Cycle.
Can the second phase of photosynthesis occur without sunlight?
Yes.
What do different plants require in terms of water and sunlight?
Different amounts of each.
Fill in the blank: The first phase of photosynthesis must have _______.
Sunlight.
True or False: The Calvin Cycle was discovered by Melvin Calvin.
True.
