P.S.Test # 1 Flashcards
Classes of rocks
- Sedimentary
- Metamorphic
- Igneous
sedimentary class
(settle) mineral and plant/animal remains and precipitated dissolved minerals
metamorphic class
(changed) by pressure, heat and sometimes water
Igneous class
(fire formed) cooled and formed from melted rock
names of rocks in sedimentary class
- coal
- limestone
- chert
- flint
- jasper
- agate
- shale (mudstone or siltsone)
- sandstone
- conglomerate
names of rocks in metamorphic class
- schist
- marble
- gneiss
- slate
- quartzite
names of rocks in Igneous class
- quartz
- scoria
- pumice
- obsidian
- hornblende
- basalt
- olivine
- feldspar
- granite
- mica
coal
black with glossy luster, burns
limestone
tiny crystals or crystals not visible, fizzes with acid
chert
white to light tan
Jasper
is red
Agate
has circular banding of varyious colors
sandstone
packed sand which breaks around grains
conglomerate
packed pebbles, sometimes called brecca f pebbles are angular
schist
banded somewhat like gneiss, but much softer and flaky due to mica
Marble
large crystals fizzes with acid
Gniess
streaks/bands of black and white in granite like rock
slate
smooth layered break with layers visible at the edges, soft, colors are gray to black with green or red occasionally
quartzite
hardened sandstone which breaks through grains giving flaky look at a few places on break, overall an irregular break. occasionally it will have a sugary luster look.
quartz
glassy crystals, irregular break, many colors (clear, white, pink, red, purple, tan, ect) cuts glass
be able to draw the rock cycle
2
four boxes 4 arrows
1. melted rock
2.igneous
scoria (volcanic cinder)
very many gas holes, dark in color
obsidian
black volcanic glass, occassionally some other dark colors
pumice
many gas holes will float in water, but light in color- sometimes this will bubble a small amount and smell like hydrogen
