A

Conscious : What you’re currently aware of
Preconscious : corresponds to ordinary memory. Long term memory.
Unconscious : mind that is not accessible to consciousness

A

Ego

A

Rational part of the personality that deals pragmatically with reality.

Follows the Reality Principle, the idea that actions must take into account the constraints of external reality.

Deals with delaying gratification, a more refined ego has better control over id impulse expression.

The Secondary Process

A

Ego process of rationally seeking an object to satisfy a desire.

The ego doesnt want to block of Id’s desires completely but sometimes has to hold them off.

The ego doesnt care about right and wrong

Superego

A

Component of personality that seeks moral perfection.

Introjection means absorbing the values of your parents into your superego.

The Ego Ideal which is the part of the superego that represents perfection and rewards for good behavior. PRIDE

The Conscience : the part of the superego that punishes violations of moral standards. GUILT

A

Super ego will try to stop Id impulse. Moral.

Ego will postpone. Rational.

Ego Strength

A

Ability of the ego to function despite competing demands of the id, superego, and reality.

Being able to balance the forces reflects greater ego strength

e.g. superego thats too strong may make someone guilty always and an id that is too strong will be to impulsive and obsessed with self gratification

The Drives in Personality

A

Hydraulic : if a drive isn’t expressed then its pressure continues to build.

Life/Sexual Instincts (Eros)
- Survival and Sexual instincts, Libido which is anything related to self preservation.

Death Instincts : self destructive instincts (Thanatos) often turned outward as Aggression

Catharsis : the release of emotional tension.

Anxiety types

A

Anxiety : a feeling warning the ego that something bad is about to happen

  1. Reality Anxiety : the fear caused by real danger in the world
  2. Neurotic Anxiety : the fear the your id impulses will get out of control and get you into trouble
  3. Moral Anxiety : the fear of behaving in conflict with the super egos moral code.

Defense Mechanisms

A

Repression : preventing an idea or impulse from becoming conscious.

Suppression : trying to force something out of awareness. Requires effort or cognitive resources.

Denial : A refusal to believe that some real condition exists. Similar suppression because it takes cognitive effort.

Projection : Ascribing a threatening urge or quality in yourself to someone else. Hide ones knowledge of a disliked aspect of their self while still expressing that quality.

Rationalization : Finding a plausible but incorrect explanation for an unacceptable action or event. Justifying. Common regarding reactions to success and failure.

Intellectualization : thinking about something clinically and without emotion.

Reaction Formation : Doing the opposite of what your impulses are. e.g 2 siblings

Displacement : the shifting of an impulse from its original target to a different one.

Sublimation : Alteration of an Id impulse into a socially acceptable act. Reflects maturity because it is more adaptive.

Adams et al. study of Reaction Formation

A

Looked at participants that all said they were heterosexual.
Homophobic vs Nonhomophobic

All men watch 3 4 minute videos: 1 heterosexual activity, 1 lesbian activity, 1 homosexual activity.

Measures changes in penile circumference. (dependent variable)

Results: increase in dependent variable for all watching hetero and lesbian.

Only men reporting homophobic attitudes had increase during homosexual.

A

Manifest Content : obviously perceived, the images that make up the dream experience as its recalled.

Latent Content, underlying sources of symbolic dream images. Can be affected by sensory stimulation, current concerns, unconscious impulses.
