Psych Flashcards
Confirmation bias
Interpret information/comprehend information in favour of your own existing beliefs/hypotheses
Availability heuristic
Making quick decisions by judging the likelihood of an event based on information you can recall rather than calculating the actual probability
Framing effect
People’s perception of information varies due to the presentation in either a positive or negative frame
Pattern seeking
A cognitive bias to seek patterns and sense regularity. This can cause us to make unwarranted inferences
Survivorship bias
People focus on success and believe it must be equally possible to achieve; ignore the rate of failure or negative consequences
Moral biases
humans subconsciously have a set of moral standards to inform our personal judgments e.g. Just world hypothesis, which is the judgment of fairness
Being wrong
Some people struggle to admit they’re wrong/could be wrong and this can be due to, for example, arrogance or social embarrassment
Intentionality bias
The bias towards believing events happen for a discernible purpose or with intent rather than by accident
Anchoring and adjustment
e.g. what is the population of a country. Is it above or below a number. Our responses will be anchored to that number and will vary closely around that value
