DSM criteria for bipolar I
1) Mania for at least 1 week
2) PLUS at least 3 or more of the following [GST paid]:
a) Grandiosity
b) Decreased need for Sleep
c) Increased talkativeness
d) Pleasure seeking/ painful consequences- increased promiscuity, reckless spending
e) Increased goal oriented activities or psychomotor agitation
f) Flight of ideas
g) Distractability
3) This is severe enough to cause significant impairment to social/ occupational functioning
4) Not due to a psych effects of a substance
What is mania?
Abnormal + persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood and increased goal directed activity
DSM generalised anxiety disorder
1) Excessive anxiety + worry, occurring more days than not for at least 6 months, about a number of different activities or events
2) The pt finds it difficult to control this worry
3) Anxiety + worry are a/w 3 or more [RISC FM]
a) Restlessness
b) Irritability
c) Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep)
d) Difficulty Concentrating
e) Fatiguability
f) Muscle tension
4) These Sx cause clinically significant distress and are not due to other mental disorder
DSM MDD
1) Must have either low mood or anhedonia
2) Present for at least 2 weeks
3) PLUS at least 4 or more Sx:
a) Significant change in weight (increase or decrease)
b) Change in appetite (increase or decrease)
c) Insomnia or hypersomnia
d) Fatigue or loss of energy
e) Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
f) Decreased ability to think/ concentrate/ increased indecisiveness
g) Recurrent thoughts of death/ suicidal ideation
h) Psychomotor agitation or retardation
4) Cause clinically significant impairment
What is anhedionia?
Lacking pleasure from things previously enjoyed
DSM panic disorder
1) Recurrent unexpected panic attacks (sbrupt surge of intense fear/ discomfort, reaches peak within minutes)
2) During this time, 4 or more:
a) Palpitations, increased HR, pounding
b) Sweating
c) Trembling/ shaking
d) Sensations of SOB, smothering
e) Feelings of choking
f) Chest pain/ discomfort
g) N
h) Dizzy, unsteady, light-headed
i) Chills/ hot flushes
j) Parasthesias
k) Fear of losing control
l) Fear of dying
3) At least 1 of these attacks was followed by at least 1 month of 1 or both of the following:
a) persistent concern/ worry about additional panic attacks/ consequences
b) Significant maladaptive changes in behaviour related to attacks
4) Not due to substances
