Stress
The process by which we perceive and respond to certain events.
Stress Reactions
Our physical and emotional responses to a stressor. (fear, anxiety, arousal ect.)
Appraisal Mode of stress
Whether we experience stress depends on our cognitive appraisal of the event and the resources we have to deal with it.
Stressors
Events or situations that are perceived as harmful, threatening, or challenging create a stress response.
The 3 types of stressors
Catastrophes, Significant life changes, daily hassles, and social stress.
What can stress lead to?
Increased vulnerability to heart disease and a predictor of high blood pressure.
Type A Personality
Competitive, urgency about time, driven to succeed, impatient, prone to anger or hostility.
Type B personality
Easygoing, relaxed
Personal Control
An important personal/cognitive factor that determines how people account for what happens in their lives.
Internal locust of control and examples
You determine the outcomes in your life. Examples include personal traits, efforts, abilities, and intelligence.
External locust of controls and examples
Factors beyond your control determine the outcomes in life. Examples include fate, luck, chance, or other people.
Social Support
Resources provided by others in times of need can be emotional support, practical advice, etc.
Problem Focused coping
Active coping, planning
Emotion Focused coping
seeking social support, accepting
Instinct theory
Focuses on genetically predisposed behaviors
Drive Reduction theory
Focuses on how we respond to inner pushes
Arousal theory
Focuses on finding the right levels of stimulation
Maslows hierarchy of needs
Focuses on the priority of some needs over others.
Instinct theory
complex behavior that’s patterned throughout a species
Evolutionary theory
certain human behaviors are due to evolutionary programming
