What is an obsession?
Persistent, intrusive thoughts, recognized to be the patient’s own, which cause patient signficant distress
Types of obsessions?
Doubts
Impulses
Ruminations
Thoughts
What is displacement?
Transferral of emotions towards a person, event or situation to another where it does not belong but carries less emotional risk
What is rationalization?
Justifying a behaviour or feeling with a plausible explanation after the event, rather than accepting unacceptable explanations
What is sublimation?
External expression of unacceptable internal impulses in a socially accepable manner
seen as healthy mechanism.
What is transference?
Projecting the pt’s own experience to the therapist.
E.g. pt unconsciously relates the
therapist to someone from his past (his abusive father).
