Beck Depression Inventory Fast Screen
7 item scale adapted from a 21 question BDI-II
- Sensitivity 97%, Specificity 99% for Major Depression
- Only available by license requiring a fee
- Over $1 for every time you use it.
Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale
20 item self-reported screening
- Sensitivity about 85% for MDD
- Specificity about 74% for MDD
- Free - online
- The patient ranks each question
from 1-4
Not a great primary care screening tool
WHO-5 Screening
5 questions assessing subjective psychological well-being
- Sensitivity 89%, specificity 86% for MDD
- For mild to severe depression screening
- Likert-scale type of assessment

- Screening tool for mood changes
- Positive screening → Further Evaluation
Better at screening for Bipolar I (depression + mania) - Not as accurate for Bipolar II or other mood disorders
GAD-7 and GAD-2 Screening
- The GAD-7 should not be used as the sole means of diagnosing anxiety disorders.
- It is sensitive to change and can be used to monitor symptoms over time.
- The GAD-2 is the first two questions of the GAD and is a good Primary care screening too

identifying pathological anxiety - Can distinguish GAD from
