Q

What happens in the phallic stage for males?

A

At around age 4 boys begin to love their mum and see their dad as competition so they end up scared their dad will find out and end up with castration anxiety (which Freud said was worse than penis envy so boys have a more developed superego which is why there was a social structure) they then repress this as it is traumatic and transfer their love to their dad and develop their superego through watching his actions.

Q

What happens in the phallic stage for females?

A

Around age 4, they start to notice social structure so they idolise dad and look down on their mum. They then realise they are like mum and get penis envy so they develop a hatred for their mum. This is then repressed as it was traumatic and the love is transferred to mum and they develop their superego by watching mums actions.

17
Q

What is the unconscious mind?

A

Freud described it as an iceberg, conscious mind being only the tip of what we know and see about ourselves. Precinscoius is just below the surface and can potentially be reached. Unconscious holds memories feelings and thoughts that we are unaware of but still influence our behaviour

18
Q

What are ego defence mechanisms?

A

They are to stop things in our unconscious mind from reaching our conscious mind.

19
Q

What are the three ego defence mechanisms?

A
  • respession, pushing it down so we forget
  • displacement, taking feelings out on something else e.g. a substitute object
  • projection, thoughts are changed e.g. I hate you –> you hate me
