Psychodynamic Explanations Flashcards
(10 cards)
What did Blackburn say would happen if the superego is inadequate?
The ID given free rein if not controlled. Criminal behaviour inevitable.
What is the consequence of the absence of the same sex parent?
A weak superego
How does a weak superego lead to criminality? And how does it form?
During the phallic stage superego forms however if no same sex parent present no opportunity for identification (superego dosent form)
This increases likelihood of criminality
How does an over harsh superego lead to criminality?
Excessively harsh superego means the individual is crippled with guilt and anxiety. Unconscious drive leading to criminality.
Criminal acts satisfy need for punishment
How does a deviant superego lead to criminality?
If a child internalised deviant same sex parent moral attitudes. This creates a deviant superego and increases criminality.
How does a loss of attachment lead to criminality?
Bowlby: affection-less psychopathy, mother crucial for future development. (44 Thieves study)
Briefly describe the 44 thieves study
14 showed signs of AP of the 14, 12 had experienced prolonged separation.
Control 2 had only experienced prolonged separation.
Describe the research support for psychodynamic explanations (AO3)
Goreta: Freudian style analysis of 10 offenders referred for psychodynamic treatment. Each offender experienced feelings of guilt and need for self punishment. (Over harsh superego)
Describe the counter evidence (AO3)
Central principles of inadequate superego theory not supported. If this was correct we would expect harsh punitive parents to raise children who experience guilt and anxiety. Evidence suggests opposite.
Describe why this theory is gender biased (AO3)
Assumes girls develop a weaker superego than boys. Girls do not experience castration anxiety so less need for identification. Should mean females more prone to criminality. This is not supported by prison populations.
