(24 cards)
What is the Sixteen Personality Questionnaire?
a standard measure of 16 enduring personality traits based on factor analysis. The factors include warmth, reasoning, emotional stability, dominance, liveliness, rule-conscientiousness, social boldness, sensitivity, vigilance, abstractness, privateness, apprehension, openness to change, self-reliance, perfectionism, and tension.
What are enduring personality traits?
those most descriptive of a person.
What is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)?
the most commonly used standardized measure of enduring personality traits, criterion based and consisting of 550 items in 8 clinical categories with answers of yes, no, or can’t say.
What are the three enduring tests of personality traits?
MMPI, 16PF, & EPI.
Who designed the MMPI?
Psychologist, S.R. Hathaway & Physician J.C. McKinley.
What were the 8 original scales from the MMPI?
Hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria, psychopathic deviate, paranoia, psychasthenia, schizophrenia, and hypomania.
What is a hypochondriac?
someone obsessed with their physical health.
What does hysteria mean?
patients tend to convert psychological stress into physical symtomology.
What is a psychopathic deviate?
patients with history of antisocial behavior.
What is paranoia?
suspicious, grandiose, persecuted patients.
What is a psychasthenia?
anxious, OCD, guild ridden.
What is hypomania?
patients displaying mood elevation, excessive activity, and unusual distractibility.
What were the two additional clinical scales of MMPI?
Masculinity-Femininity (MF) & Social-Introversion (SI).
To clear the MMPI from as many inaccurate results as possible, what response set was created?
Lying (L), Frequency/Infrequency (F), & Correction (K).
What is the most commonly used personality test?
The MPPI, being translated into all European languages.
What are the flaws with the MPPI?
Overused, correlating questions, imbalanced, too general, therefore unreliable.
Who conducted the first sports study using the MPPI?
LaPlace in 1954, used MPPI on major and minor baseball teams.
Who said “the MPPI has demonstrated merit as an instrument of measurement of personality traits… in PE and athletics”
Booth who measured freshman and varsity athletes & teams and individuals.
Who used the MPPI to see if stereotypes based on football position were accurate?
Williams and Youssef in 1972.
What did Morgan find in his study of collegiate wrestlers with the MPPI?
Those who entered as freshmen and went onto win two or more letters had a greater aptitude to adjust.
Who did Morgan and Johnson follow for four years with the MPPI starting in 1978?
50 college oarsmen for four years, finding that those who obtained at least two varsity letters had much better profiles on the MPPI.
In 1975, Johnsgard, Ogilvie, and Merritt decided to take a more variable group of parachutists, racecar drivers, and football players for the MPPI. What did they find?
The tests were very similar in results.
What was the most recent notable study of the MPPI?
Geron, Furst, and Rotstein took a large group of males, some athletes and others not. There was a clear correlation between those who were athletes and those who were not.
Is the MPPI still used today?
The MPPI has seen its better days in sport psychology assessment, but the instrument served an important historical function in promoting personal assessments.
