What is family therapy?

A

A form of psychotherapy that involves the whole family, including the family member with schizophrenia. Therapists meet regularly with the patient and family members, for usually between 9 months and a year. It’s based on the family dysfunction explanation.

A

To improve the quality of communication and interaction between family members, reduce stress within family and reduce levels of expressed emotion. This should reduce chances of relapse.
