Psychology - Memory Revision Flashcards
Meant for studying the basics of memory for years 9 - 10 especially for upcoming SACS (28 cards)
What is memory?
Processing, storage and retrieval of information
What is encoding?
The process of converting information into a form that can be stored in memory.
What is storage in memory?
The process of maintaining and keeping information in the memory system over time.
What is sensory memory?
Retrieves sensory information from the environment and enables perceptual continuity for the world around us.
What is Short Term Memory (STM)?
Retrieves information from sensory memory and transfers information to and from long term memory (LTM).
What is Long Term Memory (LTM)?
The permanent storage of information that can last from hours to a lifetime.
What is the function of memory?
The role memory has in enabling learning, recalling information, and guiding behavior.
What is the capacity of memory?
The amount of information that can be held in memory at one time.
What is the duration of memory?
The length of time a memory can be held in long and short term memory.
What is rehearsal?
There are two ways your brain can rehearse a memory for it to be stored in your long term memory.
What is maintenance rehearsal?
Repeating the information being remembered to preserve it in your short term memory.
What is elaborative rehearsal?
Giving new meaning to new information and making associations with other information.
What is attention in memory?
When you pay attention to any sensory memory, it goes into your short term memory.
What is the Atkinson and Shiffrin Multistore Model?
The model used to show how a memory goes from sensory information into your long term memory.
What is explicit memory?
Memory that involves awareness and conscious thought.
What is semantic memory?
Semantic memories are facts and knowledge about the world.
What is episodic memory?
Personally experienced events that include details of time and place.
What is implicit memory?
Memory that can be retrieved without awareness.
What is procedural memory?
Procedural memories are usually actions that involve a series of steps.
What is classically conditioned memory?
Memories formed due to associations.
What part of the brain stores short term memories?
Hippocampus
What is retrieval in memory?
The process of accessing and bringing stored information back into conscious awareness.
What is recall?
Involves reproducing information stored in memory.
What is recognition?
Involves identifying the original, learnt information.
