Q

what is the genetic explanation of OCD?

A
  • genetic evidence has found that first degree relatives of people with OCD have a greater vulnerability of developing the disorder
-Nedstadt et al found that first degree relatives of OCD sufferers had a 3% chance of developing the disorder compared to a 12% risk in the general population
Hence the genetic explanation suggests that some people may inherit a genetic predisposition to developing OCD
-in summary, the genetic explanation suggests that some people may inherit a genetic predisposition to developing an OCD

Q

What is the one of the genes that could be responsible for OCD? - starts with an S
-(for genetic explanation of OCD)

A

-research has found a specific type of gene that could be responsible for OCD called candidate genes. These genes are involved in regulating the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin which correlated with cases of OCD
-one such impaired gene is called the sert gene. If this is impaired, it leads to problems with the transport of the neurotransmitter serotonin. This ultimately leads to diminished levels of serotonin which correlates with cases of OCD
-in one study a mutation of this gene was found in 2 unrelated families where 6 out of 7 members has an OCD

Q

What is another gene that may be responsible for OCD?
-starts with a D
(for the genetic explanation of OCD)

A

-another candidate gene identified in cases of OCD is an impaired COMT gene. In short, this gene regulates the production of another neurotransmitter called dopamine. An impaired COMT gene leaves too much dopamine in the synapse, resulting in some of the compulsive behaviors seen in patients with OCD.
-Taylor has identified up to 230 candidate genes that may contribute to OCD, which ultimately suggests that OCD is polygenic

Q

what is the neural explanation of OCD?

A

-that the role of a damaged caudate nucleus and the orbitofrontal cortex
-several layers of the front lobes of the brain are thought to be abnormal in people with OCD. the caudate nucleus normally suppresses signals from the orbital frontal cortex (OFC)
-in turn, the OFC sends signals to the thalamus about things that are worrying, such as a potential germ hazard. when the caudate nucleus is damaged, it fails to suppress minor ‘worry’ signals and the thalamus is alerted, which it turn sends signals back to the OFC, acting as a worry circuit.

Q

What is the role of low serotonin (for neural explanation of OCD)

A

-lower levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin which influences mood regulation, anxiety, sleep and social behavior has been linked to OCD
-the exact influence of lowered levels of serotonin plays a role in preventing behavior repetition and therefore low levels of this neurotransmitter may be linked to the compulsions that can be displayed as a symptom of OCD

9
Q

What is the role of low dopamine for the neural explanation of OCD??

A
  • lower levels of dopamine have been linked to OCD
  • dopamine is released when your brain is expecting a reward. When you come to associate a certain activity with pleasure, mere anticipation may be enough to raise dopamine levels
  • it could be certain food, sex, shopping or anything you enjoy
  • but when you don’t get that feeling of a reward your brain has to do it over and over to feel it

Q

What is research support for neutral explanation as a strength??

A

Ursu and Carter ministered Brian activity in OCD patients using MRI scanners and found hyperactivity in the orbital frontal cortex, exactly what this neural explanations suggests

Q

What are the practical applications for the neural expiations??

A

As we know OCD suffered have low serotonin we can give them medications to raise serotonin and remove OCD symptoms
This treatment has been particularly successful helping nearly 70% patients that take this medication

13
Q

Why is neural explanation being scientific a strength??

A

Neural factors in OCD can be studied in objective and falsifiable ways, for example, a damaged caudate nucleus can be readily identified with scanning devices like FMRI’s
Likewise lower serotonin could be deduced by very sensitive PET scans or by examining cerebrospinal fluids
Helps promote psychology as a scientific subject

15
Q

Why does drug therapy affect neurotransmitters??? For treatment

A

When neurotransmitters are released into synaptic gap, not all of it attaches to the receptor sites in the receiving neuron. The remaining neurotransmitters must be removed to allow the synapse to return to its normal state.
This is done in one of two ways=
1) re uptake of the remaining neurotransmitter into the presynaptic neuron
2) breakdown of the neurotransmitter in the synaptic cleft by an enzyme

16
Q

What drug therapy is used to treat OCD??

A

SSRIs = are antidepressants medications which aim to alleviate symptoms of OCD by increasing the amount of serotonin available in the brain
(Selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors)

17
Q

How do SSRIs work for testing OCD??

A
  • E.g: Prozac blacks the reputable pump in the synapse making more serotonin available
  • SSRIs reduce the rate of re absorption making more available in the synaptic gap. By blocking the transportation of serotonin from the synapse back into the pre-synaptic neuron, SSRIs keep serotonin floating around the synaptic space, helping reduce OCD symptoms
  • due to increase in availability some serotonin receptors that are actually inhibitory reduce in numbers which is called down regulation
  • this process ultimately makes each serotonin cell fire more rapidly, further increasing serotonin levels. This neuroadaptation takes a few weeks to occur
18
Q

What are some other drugs for drug therapy for treating OCD??

A

-anti-anxiety drug = Valium - boost power of inhibitory neurotransmitters GABA. This slows down all brain communication and has a widespread calming effect
- Beta blockers = work on beta receptors around the body not the brain. These drugs bleck effect of adrenaline which prevents stress and bodily effects of anxiety caused by obsessions and compulsions

19
Q

What are some strengths of treatment for OCD??

A
  • evidence of effectiveness
  • cost effective
  • scientific
20
Q

What are some weaknesses of the treatment of OCD?

A
  • unwanted side effects
  • do not offer permanent solution
21
Q

What is evidence for treatment of OCD as a strength??

A

Typically OCD symptoms decline for 70% of patients taking SSRIs
Soomro et al found that pts in all 17 diff studies reviewed showed significant improvement with SSRIs than pts receiving placebo drug
SSRIs don’t work for everyone but can be prescribed with SNRIs instead

22
Q

How is the treatment for OCD being cost effective a strength??

A

Psychologist therapies need time and motivation from patients to engage in process where drug therapy requires far less
For example, CBT which takes several sessions and patients get additional homework. But drug therapies are easy for patient to engage with

23
Q

Why are the unwanted side effects of drug therapies a weakness of treatment of OCD??

A

Indigestion, dependency, blurred vision and loss of sex drive are common side effects
Due to this patients may stop taking their medication and reduce effectiveness of treatment

24
Q

What are the weaknesses of neural explanation

A
  • theoretical flaws Between link of OCD and brain abnormality is merely correlation and we cannot establish cause and effect
  • both low serotonin and an impaired caudate nucleus at linked to OCD but as we don’t have before measurements, we are not sure whether they have caused OCD or have developed because of OCD which allows another factor that may have caused low serotonin and OCD to develop
25
Q

Why is supporting evidence for the genetic explanation of OCD a strength??

A

Netstadt review of twin studies found a concordance rate of 0.67 for MZ twins but only 0.31 for DZ twins
Hence the close the genetic relationship to a sufferer the greater risk developing OCD

26
Q

Why is that the genetic explanation promoting psychology as a scientific discipline a strength??

A

As genetics can be studied objectively and reliably using DNA analysis and studying family history (concordance rates).
E=

27
Q

Why might research also saying that genes cannot be the only factor in development of OCD a weakness of the genetic explanation for OCD??

A

If genres were the only explanation then MZ twins would show 100% concordance in OCD
As this is not the case, there must also be Environmental u fluencies like imitation of role models or a triggering experience

28
Q

Why might the genetic explanation being biologically reductionist a weakness??

A

Ignores other actors than genes like the role of early trauma in childhood or some psychologists suggest that OCD may be learnt through classical conditioning and maintained through operant conditioning where a stimulus s associated with anxiety
