What is the aim of family therapy?
It sees families as a system where every members behaviour impacts on others before. It looks at behaviour-what is said and done and how it is interpreted
-Members of the family may not be aware of the things they say and do and its impact
-the aim is to avoid blame
-Everyone is given time and space to express their view and answer questions

How does family therapy work?
Ideally as many members of the family attend as possible, it can include just two
A therapist is in the room to support discussion and ask questions
A therapy team will observe the discussion and provide feedback
How often/how long is family therapy
Weekly (sometimes less) usually over 3 months
What aspects of family therapy are important for schizophrenia to know?
FT reduces rate of relapse and improves medication adherence in schizophrenia
-Works on high expressed emotion which is linked to an overly involved or critical attitude towards relative.
What specific approaches and interventions can be included in family therapy?
Psychoeducation about schizophrenia
Recognising stressors
Recognising relapse signs
Structured problem solving
Comms skills training
Stress management
How does systemic desensitisation work?
It is a form of CBT-it is thought the way we think would affect how we feel and behave
SD usually refers to graded exposure with relaxation. It involves allowing the person to draw up a hierarchy of fears and then involving them doing the less anxiety provoking ones first and then going to more c this is paired with relaxation exercises.
-12-16 sessions on a weekly basis usually 45 mins to 1 hour
-Might involve homework
What is exposure and response prevention?
Type of behavioural approach within CBT
Make a hierarchy of situations from least to most anxious
Gradually expose you to the situation and at the same time will prevent you from performing your routine ritual
What 4 main areas does IPT explore
- Role deficits-any conflict in relationships
- Loss /grief
- Role transitions
- difficulties starting or maintaining relationships
How does IPT work
16-20 sessions
3 main stages-1. Built a therapeutic relationship and understand difficulties, 2. Analysis by therapist of your communication style and advice on developing new skills through role play
3. Strengthen skills learn and look at reposted for you to handle interpersonal problems in future
Explain transference
The process in which a patient projects onto the therapist feelings and emotions that are derived from previous difficult relationships (give example)
What is labelling (cognitive distortion)
I.e I am just not a healthy person
What is displacement (defence mechanism)?
Taking your feelings out on someone else
What is sublimation? (DM)
Converting unacceptable impulsive into more acceptable outlets
What is reaction formation (DM)
Replacing an unwanted impulse with its opposite I.e acting happy about a breakup
