PT II Lesson 7 Flashcards
Deck objective is to learn, obviously bruh (40 cards)
Reference blocks contain…
Known defects
Reference blocks can be made up of…
Aluminum
Steel
Nickel
Glass
Ceramic
Reference blocks checks for and can be used for…
Penetrant sensitivity
Comparison tests
Penetrant or emulsifier washability
System monitor panels are used to…
Detect major changes both in visible and fluorescent systems, and in water washable and post emulsifiable systems
Aluminum reference blocks are created by…
heating and water quenched to produce thermal cracks
Used for comparing the performance of penetrants in field conditions
How are aluminum reference blocks prepared for use?
They are scrubbed with a bristle brush and liquid solvent, followed by degreasing and drying
After use, how are aluminum reference blocks prepared for reuse?
It is cleaned. The block is heated to 800 degrees Fahrenheit and then quenched in cold water. It is then reheated to 160 degrees F to drive off moisture, and then cooled to room temp
What are you looking for in a cermanic reference plate?
The number or distribution of porosity indications
Describe what ceramic block usage looks like
A small drop of each penetrant is applied to surface. Penetrants are blotted with soft tissue. after dwell time, developer is applied.
Ceramic block cleaning
soaked in alcohol for several hours. Once cleaned it is then placed into a container with fresh alcohol, preferably Jamesons.
Anodized and plated test panels purpose
Stressed and cracked anodized aluminum and chrome plated nickel panels are used to compare sensitivity and washability
Anodized and plated test panels preparation includes…
scrubbed and rinsed with emulsifier or soap and then rinsed with water.
It is then dried
The panel is then dipped in acetone for a minute, then dried
Twin nickel-chromium sensitivity panels
Allows for matching crack patterns of two matching crack panels that can compare two different penetrents
have crack depths of 10, 20, 30, and 50 um
What are stainless steel plates used for?
Used for testing the washability of fluorescent and visible penetrants
How are cracks created in low cycle fatigue blocks (LCFb)?
Cracks are started from EDM (electrical discharge machined) notches or spot welds
What type of material is commonly used for low cycle fatigue blocks?
Titanium or nickel-chromium-iron
How are Low cycle blocks discontinuities recorded?
The number of indications are counted
If fewer cracks are counted, then something is wrong with the process capability, or the block was improperly cleaned
LCF blocks are stored in…
Acetone
The in-service quality of the material used in PT is determined by…
Check of:
Sensitivity
Water content
Washability
Contamination
What is the purpose sensitivity comparison test?
To compare used or questionable penetrant to a control penetrant
How is the sensitivity test performed?
The used penetrant is applied to one half while the control is applied to the other side. Indications are then visually compared. If there are noticeable differences or contamination the penetrant is discarded.
Water washability test purpose?
Shows how the penetrant is removed compared to a control. If there is too much retention, then the penetrant is to be discarded.
Water content of a penetrant is best determined by the test described by which standard?
ASTM D95-13e1
What does the water content test look for?
Gelling, separating, clouding, coagulating, or floating of water, and water percentage.
If any of these conditions exist or the water content exceeds a percentage determined by specifications, then the penetrant is rejected.
