EHA
Education for all handicapped children act, 1975
IDEA
Individuals with Disabilities Education ACT
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation act of 1973
Designed to ensure that recipients of federal funds do not discriminate against individuals with disabilities. Allows for individuals with disabilities who may not need special education to have access to related services (PT)
IDEA part A
Defines the terms.
Education is more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic
IDEA part B
Allows for federal funds to be distributed to states, including rules and regulations. Ages 3-21
IDEA part c
Ages birth - 3
FAPE
Free and Appropriate Public Education: must provide regular and/or special education to eligible students
Related Services
PT, OT, counceling, orientation and mobility, adaptive PE, ect.
LRE
Least Restrictive Environment: Special children in class with non-disabled if possible. Separate if needed
IEP
Individualized Education Plan: goals, objectives. Legally binding.
Referral
When a child ages out of early childhood (3) or moves school districts
Evaluation
Determine if child is eligible for special education services. Must have disability as defined under IDEA and a need for special educational services.
PT eval
If eligible for special education a PT eval must be performed to determine if the student qualifies for PT. (function in school)
Goals
Goals for the child, not simply failed test items. Must be FUNCTIONAL (something someone else will have to do if the child doesn’t). 1 year goals, new IEP meeting if met before.
IEP Meeting
Entire team is invited with mandatory attendance.
