Why did authorities use humiliation and punishment ?
Reinforce social hierarchy due to the rapid population growth , vagrancy , war and plague
What was female humiliation and moral regulation like in this period ?
Very common for women if they were domineering , infidel or a threat to patriarchal society
Guilty brought to ecclesiastical courts to dissuade others of adultery / prozzy
If women hen picked men or were domineering - they would beat pots and pans oustide their homes drawing attention
What was banging pots and pans outside guilty womens home called in different areas ?
England - Skimmington
France - Charivari ( women walking through town bald ) or any cucks rode a horse backwards with a wife riding it
How was legal punishments engaged during this period of time ?
Petty crimes - people put in town centre where people would throw stuff at them
Prozzies put on ducking stool
Serious crime - Branding as a sign to not misbehave again
Murder / treason punished by execution - seen as entertaining
How was moral regulation used during this period ?
Morals regulated by the church as well as secular authority
Catholic church used the council of trent as a response to the CR and attempted to place stricter controls on behaviour - Pope Paul III keen to limit celebrations around saint days
Protestants attacked festivals and saw them as pagan / associated with catholic saints and a distraction from the church
What was the council of Trent ?
Part of the CR to place stricter rules on behaviour for the public and Pope Paul III was keen to limit celebration days as they were hijacked by bad people
