Conflict
A struggle between opposing forces
Complications
The problems that come up during a story as characters try to resolve the conflict

External conflict
A character struggle against some outside force
Connotation
The feeling or emotions surrounding a word
Context clues
A vocabulary strategy in which the reader looks at the words around an unfamiliar word to find clues to its meaning

Figurative

Flashback
A scene or event from the past that appears in a narrative out of chronological order, to fill in information or explain something in the present

The use hints and clues to suggest what will happen later in a plot
