Pulpal Therapy Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is an absolute contraindication to a pulpotomy?
Evidence of inflammation extending beyond the coronal pulp
Why is CaOH a bad medicament choice for pulpotomy of primary teeth?
internal resorption
What is the purpose of formocresol?
fixation of pulp stumps
What medicament is usually used for indirect/direct pulp therapy?
CaOH
What is the pH of CaOH?
12.5
What is the composition of MTA?
Portland cement with calcium silicates, gypsum, and bismuth oxide
Why should MTA not be used in anterior teeth in some cases?
bismuth oxide can cause discoloration
What is biodentine made of?
calcium silicateW
What is an advantage of biodentine over MTA?
faster setting time
How long should formocresol be applied?
Historically 5min, but evidence is showing 1min is just as successful with less persistent post-inflammation
Which medicament is known to cause a faster exfoliation of primary teeth?
formocresol
What is the purpose of ferric sulfate?
hemostatic agent that causes coagulation of blood where vessels have been severed
What is the purpose of sodium hypochlorite?
irrigant and anti-microbial agent
What is the MOA of MTA and biodentine?
form a calcific barrier
What are good medicaments for root filling material in primary pulpectomies?
ZOE, calcium hydroxide, Vitapex (calcium hydroxide and iodoform)
What is done in the first appointment of stepwise caries removal?
removal of soft caries and placement of transitional restoration
What is done in the second appointment of stepwise caries removal?
re-evaluation after 6-12 mo and re-entry for complete caries removal and placement of definitive restoration
What is the purpose of apexification?
elicit root end closure in a necrotic pulp
How can CaOH be used to perform apexification?
multiple visits and replacement of CaOH every 3-6mo until root end closure is achieved
How can MTA be used to perform apexification?
place in apical 1/3 of canal, then fill with gutta percha and the MTA will induce root end closure
What is the pH of MTA?
10-12
