A

a penalty (like a fine or imprisonment) imposed by a court on a person guilty of a criminal offence.

1st purpose of sanctions.

A

punishment - it means to punish the offender. the courts take it upon themselves to ensure a offender is punished by imposing a sanction that is just and fair in light of the crime they committed. imprisonment and deprivation of freedom are the ultimate punishment.

deterrence - it aims to deter/discourage the offender and others in society from committing the same or similar offences, by letting them see the serious consequences for committing that crime.

A

denunciation - it’s designed to spread the messages that this type of criminal behaviour will not be tolerated by the courts. (denunciation is often emphasised in cases involving offending that could be undertaken by many members of society)
