Ruth May is making an observant comment about how faith is often abused and used to support hateful ideas. It would apepar that this observation is more Kingsolver's than the character's. He doesnt agree with using religion to support unjust laws or ideas. Some students may be unfamilliar with both allusions and may need to read information about both Jim Crow and the story of Ham.

Nathan has not seen everything but he acts like he has. He doesnt listen to Mama Tataba when she tries to help him in the garden. Leah adores her father. She trusts him and looks up to him and is blind to his wrongs.
