Q

How is this condition corrected?

A

This condition can be corrected by performing an ovariohysterectomy, the incision for the pyometra will be a lot longer than that of a standard ovariohysterectomy, and this is because the uterus is much larger and often will not be removed through a smaller incision.

Q

Pre op

A

These patients must be handled carefully as the uterus is distended and friable, and can rupture with forceful handling. Intravenous fluid therapy and antibiotics are administered prior to the procedure, and the surgery will proceed once the patient is stable.

Patient Prep + Positioning

A

The patient is clipped and the skin prepared aseptically as for that of ovariohysterectomy procedures. The patient is placed in dorsal recumbency with the forelimbs extended cranially and the hind limbs caudally.

Q

Instruments and Materials

A

Much the same as a large bitch spey, but a large metal tray or something to deposit the large pus filled uterus into is required. The pus filled uterus must be weighed post operatively so correct medications can be administered to the patient. Four quarter drapes are often selected, so that the surgeon can select the correct size window for the procedure.
