24
Q

Test for ammonium ion in aq ammonia?

25
Test for sulfate ion?
Acidify the solution with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous barium nitrate. White ppt formed.
26
Test for chloride ion?
Acidify the solution with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous silver nitrate. White ppt form.
27
Test for iodide ion?
Acidify the solution with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous silver nitrate. Yellow ppt form.
28
Test for nitrate ion?
Add aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to the metal nitrate, then add aluminium foil/powder. Warm the mixture. Ammonia produced.
29
Explain the principle of test for nitrate ion?
Nitrate ions are reduced by aluminium [reduction property of metals] in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide to form ammonia gas.
30
Test for carbonate ion? CO3 2-
React with any dilute acid. Effervescence produced and is found to be carbon dioxide.
31
Test for carbon dioxide gas
Bubble gas into limewater. White ppt produced. When excess CO2, ppt dissolves. CO2 + Ca(OH)2 -----> CaCO3 + H2O in excess CO2: CaCO3 + H2O + CO2 -----> Ca(HCO3)2
32
Test for ammonia gas
Damp red litmus paper turns blue
33
Test for chlorine gas
Bleaches damp litmus paper
34
Test for sulfur dioxide
Acidified potassium manganate (VII) (aq) turns from purple to colourless. Sulfur dioxide is reducing agent, KMnO7 is oxidising agent. Manganese VII (Mn7+) reduced to Manganese II (Mn2+)
35
Test for hydrogen
Lighted splint / burning splint. Flame is extinguished with a loud "pop" sound.
36
Test for oxygen
Glowing splint. Flame is rekindled with placed near mouth of the test tube.
37
Is Calcium Hydroxide Ca(OH)2 soluble in water?
Slightly
38
Is Zinc Hydroxide Zn(OH)2 soluble in water?
No
39
Is Iron II & Iron III Oxide soluble in water?
No
40
Is Copper II Oxide soluble in water?
No
41
Action of heat on substances
1. Elements react w O2 2. Compounds react w O2 3. Metal carbonates decompose to form metal oxide and carbon dioxide (except group 1 carbonates)
42
Colour of solid carbon

51
Potassium dichromate (VI) solution colour change
Orange to green Cr6+ to Cr3+
52
