Qualities of leader Flashcards
(6 cards)
Encouraging and Enthusiastic
You may not always feel enthusiastic or feel like you can be encouraging, but this can really help a teammate get through a challenging patch and make the difference between a young person staying or going. So be enthusiastic and encouraging as often as you can be, in a way that is authentic to you. You can be enthusiastic and encouraging while being honest about how you are feeling
Responsible and Dependable
You have responsibilities on NCS, so it is important you are fully prepared for these responsibilities. Make sure you know what your role and responsibilities mean to you, and be prepared leading up to and during the programme. Young people will depend and rely on you so do your best to help keep them safe!
Present and in the moment
It is really important to be in the moment and not distracted by others, your thoughts, or electronic devices. Imagine what a young person might feel like if you are distracted when they are talking to you, especially if they are trying to share something important or personal.
Curious and open to learning
NCS is a great opportunity for personal growth for everyone involved - including you! You will develop leadership and other transferable skills, and you’ll learn about yourself and others. You have to be open to having your beliefs challenged and stretched - in a safe and supportive way - to get the most out the NCS experience.
Team Player
NCS attracts inspirational staff members, which accounts for a huge part of the success of NCS. Be a team player; go above and beyond your job description; be aware of the needs of the programme as a whole, and how you and your teammates work together and support each other to ensure its success.
Be fun and have fun
It is very important to have fun on NCS, but it is even more important to know how to bring fun to NCS! There will be times when you have to ‘raise the roof and have some fun’ to inject some energy back into your team. Especially when your team are tired, disengaged, or struggling, or where the programme or schedule has been content-heavy.
