Q

What is an RCT?

A

RCT stands for randomized controlled trial.

In simplified terms, an RCT, or Randomized Controlled Trial, is a type of scientific study where researchers test the effects of a new treatment or intervention. The “randomized” part means that participants are randomly assigned to either receive the new treatment or a standard treatment (or a placebo). This random assignment helps ensure that any differences observed between the two groups are more likely due to the treatment itself rather than other factors.

The “controlled” part means that there is a control group that doesn’t receive the new treatment but might receive a placebo or the current standard treatment. By comparing the outcomes of the treated group with the control group, researchers can assess whether the new treatment is effective.

Q

What is a cross-sectional study?

A

Cross-sectional studies collect data from participants at a single point in time to analyze relationships between variables.

Example: Surveys, opinion polls.

Q

What is a Quasi-experimental study?

not random

A

Like a true experiment, a quasi-experimental design aims to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between an independent and dependent variable. However, unlike a true experiment, a quasi-experiment does not rely on random assignment. Instead, subjects are assigned to groups based on non-random criteria.

Assigned: Each clt knows which group they are in & what they are getting

Q

Briefly explain what qualitative reasearch is/ looks at? Provide examples.

A

Qualitative research provides a greater undestanding of a phenomenon by studying a target populations lived experiences, beliefs, opinions, meaningfulness, and motivations about it.

In-depth interviews, focus groups, content analysis (themes/concepts)

Q

What is a case-control study?

A

Case-control studies compare individuals with a specific condition (cases) to those without the condition (controls) to identify factors associated with the condition.

Ex. Investigating factors associated with a specific disease.
